Firefly Rocks!

So we completed the latest episode of Jungle Beat!
It's called 'This Little Light of Mine', and it features a cute and feisty firefly.
Traditionally Jungle Beat has followed a broad, universal approach to their lighting workflow. This means that there was a standard lighting rig that was applied to each shot with little room for individual shot lighting and refinement. This has worked in the past because the past environments have always been set in broad daylight with very little need for dramatic light or shadows.
After a lengthy hiatus, I'm back at Sunrise in Westlake working on the second season of 'Jungle Beat'.
There are some new faces in the studio and some old(er), but still the same, fun vibe that makes with working Phil and his team such a pleasant experience.
Here is a selection of 10 shots that I lit, rendered and comp'd on Legend of the Guardians that Animal Logic very kindly packaged and released for the artists.
I will be add the remaining shots that I worked on once the DVD is released.
All of these shots were lit in Maya, rendered with Mayaman & PRMan, and comp'd in Nuke.
Well the production is drawing to an end.
Friends, colleagues, mates and 'booshar's' are packing their bags and slowly trickling back to where they came from.
It's been such an amazing experience, right from day one! The place, the work, the culture and, most of all, the people, have all conspired to bring together the best of everything and I am delighted to have been a small part of it.
I've learnt so much this past year that it's difficult to cram it into one article. From the early dev months to the past few 'crunch' months, I've been exposed to so much talent, expertise, technical and artistic wizardry, and plain awesome work that it's difficult to think of life without it hereafter.
So, a fat Thank You to Craig Welsh for the opportunity and to Grant Freckelton for the invaluable education I got from watching him work in dailies, to Brady and his team for the great food, to Bone, the TD's & the wranglers for getting an unbelievable amount of stuff rendered (despite my best efforts to strangle the farm ;-), to the comp artists for bailing me out of the crap so often I've lost count, to the sys and data admin guys who I've never met but who tirelessly clean up my messy data trail, to Zareh, Imke and the production girls, esp Bree (;-) for pulling it all together, and of course to my numerous colleagues in the lighting departments, as well as the fx and character fx brains behind such awesome fx and feather solutions. You guys are freakin' x-factor, mutant endowed, creative wonders!
Below is a pic of the lighting, fx, character fx and compositing crew taken just before people started leaving, fronted by the inimitable Mr Welsh, dressed to conquer. And the second photo is of my fellow team mates in my lighting unit. Rock on team 3! And finally the official crew photo (with many artists missing) that gives you an idea of how many artists it took to change that lightbulb!

Here's the second trailer for 'Legend of the Guardians' due for release in September.
This trailer features a heap of new shots from the film!
Below are a few quicktime screen grabs from the four shots that I worked on that made it into the trailer. Click the thumbnails to enlarge.
Excuse the bad quality but I can't show any of the unreleased work until the movie comes out towards the end of the year.
Bear in mind that these frames are a far cry from the quality you will see in theatres, especially if you watch
it in stereo (3D). It's going to be a beautiful movie!!!

Finally! The trailer for the movie I've been working on (well, me and 500 or so other moon-howlers!) at Animal Logic has been released. And it's a cracker!
Hugo Weaving Narrates and the visuals are simply magical! Great
music, gorgeous images, awesome voices, and it'll be showing in 3D in
select cinemas. The movie is scheduled for release in September 2010.
Click the link below for a youTube clip but if you really want to see the goodness download this hi-def quicktime clip.

I'm off to Oz!
I landed a dream job at premiere VFX/animation studio Animal Logic. This marks the culmination of more than 5 years' worth of plans, hopes and ambitions! It's been a dream of mine to work on full-fledged, long-form animated features for a very, very longtime! I just didn't figure I would have to travel half way around the world to do it! :-)
I was recently invited to assess an animated final year honours project at AFDA film school. The project is directed by Jesca Leibrandt, produced by Saskia Schiel with contributions from Sarlee van den Berg (voice/actress), Leigh-anne Lyners & Marius Strydom(editing), Gustav Stutterheim(Sound/music) & Pierre de Villiers(Cinematography).
VALA stands for Value Added Learning Audit. Together with Steve Drake, Rowan van Tonder, Jaco Janse van Rensburg, Anthony & Justin Ford I spent two days assessing the project through 5 different disciplines: Narrative, Performance, Medium, Aesthetics & Control...
